Summary: WA AutoTranslate is designed to be privacy-first. We do not store your messages, we do not sell your data, and we do not require you to create an account. Your conversations remain entirely yours.
1 Overview
WA AutoTranslate ("we", "our", "the Extension") is a Chrome browser extension that provides real-time translation of messages within WhatsApp Web. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use our extension.
By installing and using WA AutoTranslate, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please uninstall the extension.
2 Data We Collect
We collect minimal, non-personal information strictly necessary for the extension to function:
- Extension settings and preferences (stored locally in your browser via Chrome Storage API)
- Chosen target language for translation (stored locally, never transmitted to our servers)
- Aggregated, anonymised usage statistics (e.g., how many translations were performed) — only if you opt into analytics
All preferences are stored locally on your device using the Chrome Storage API and are never transmitted to any external server controlled by us.
3 What We Never Collect
We explicitly do not collect, store, transmit, or have access to:
- The content of any WhatsApp messages (incoming or outgoing)
- Contact names, phone numbers, or profile information
- Media files, images, videos, or voice notes
- Your WhatsApp account credentials or session tokens
- Your IP address, device identifiers, or location data
- Browsing history on any website other than web.whatsapp.com
Important: Message content passes transiently through memory only for the duration of a translation request. It is never written to disk, logged, or retained after the translation is returned.
4 Translation Processing
To perform translations, the extension sends the text of individual messages to a third-party translation service (such as Google Translate or a similar provider). This transmission is subject to that provider's own privacy policy and terms of service.
- Only the text content of the message is transmitted — no metadata, phone numbers, or contact information
- Transmissions are made over encrypted HTTPS connections
- We recommend reviewing the privacy policy of the translation provider used
We do not operate our own translation backend and do not intercept or log these requests on our end.
5 Browser Permissions
The extension requests the following Chrome permissions, and only uses them as described:
- activeTab / web.whatsapp.com access: Required to read and modify the WhatsApp Web page in order to display translated text inline
- storage: To save your language preferences locally in your browser
- scripting: To inject the translation UI into WhatsApp Web
No permissions are used beyond their stated purpose.
6 Third Parties
We do not sell, rent, trade, or share any personal information with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes. The only third-party interaction is the translation API call described in Section 4.
This extension is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to WhatsApp Inc. or Meta Platforms, Inc. in any way.
7 Children's Privacy
This extension is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children. If you believe a child has used this extension and you have concerns, please contact us.
8 Policy Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify users via the Chrome Web Store listing. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
